The revolt against working from home has continued to
gather pace after one of Britain's biggest banking institutions told employees that bonuses would be lost if their office attendance didn't improve.
Senior staff at Lloyds Banking Group have been informed
that the firm may cut their bonuses should they fail to go into the office at least twice
per week.
In the banking giant's forthcoming round of bonuses, attendance
requirements will be a factor for roughly 20 per cent
of its 60,000 staff.
The decision by Lloyds comes just a number of
weeks after the firm re-opened its City headquarters following an 18-month renovation period, with the Old Broad Street location now housing in excess of 5,000 staff.
The Covid pandemic ushered in a new era of
hybrid working at some of the UK's largest companies,
but this move by Lloyds, was first reported by The
Guardian, highlights a growing appetite amongst firms to return to the
pre-pandemic status quo.
Initially the means by which the white-collar
economy could continue to operate whilst strict lockdown measures
were enforced, remote working has since become the norm and a means of
attracting workers with the carrot of workplace flexibility.
However, concerns over employee productivity, coupled with the requirement to justify lofty rents for city
office space, have seen a host of major employers reverse course and attempt to divert back
towards an in-office work environment.
Lloyds are not the first bank to make a move against remote working, after
Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs issued a 2023 edict
which declared staff must work all five days of the
week in the office.
Senior staff at Lloyd's Banking Group have been informed that the
firm may cut their bonuses should they fail
to go into the office at least twice per week
In the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) most recent figures, it was
shown that two in five UK workers enjoy at least some sort of remote working arrangement
Worries over a malaise in corporate culture and the lack of opportunity for new
and younger staff members to hone their skills under the supervision of experienced
colleagues are other reasons cited by leading firms for pursuing more
in-office time.
Just last week, America's biggest lender,
JPMorgan Chase, told its staff that they will be required to attend their offices in person five days a week from March.
Similarly, Amazon returned to in-office work only
from the start of the new year.

Two out of five employees work from home some of all of the time
The revolt against working from home is not just confined to the corporate world:
last week the Metropolitan Police warned thousands of staff
that their pay would be docked for every day staff
refuse to come into the office when they are contracted to
do so.
These positions included 999 call handlers, PCSOs and child protection officers.
Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures suggest two in five UK workers enjoy a
remote working arrangement.
This figure rose to two-thirds for people in management positions.
There were large discrepancies in remote working numbers based on education level:
almost 60 per cent of those with a degree work some or all the time from home,
whereas less than 10 per cent of those without third level qualifications did so.
Reacting to the new enforcement of their hybrid working policy, a spokesperson for Lloyds stated the firm was 'proud
to offer an industry-leading approach to flexible working which delivers many benefits for our
colleagues while ensuring that we are well-placed to deliver on our ambitious strategy to transform our business and continue to deliver
for our customers'.

French President Emmanuel Macron has blamed his contraction of the Covid-19 virus on a combination of negligence and bad luck on Friday.
The 42-year-old head of state urged his compatriots to
stay safe in a self-shot video from the presidential retreat in Versailles where he is in self-isolation, as critics called out slip-ups in his
behavior to prevent infection.
Macron said he was experiencing symptoms that included headaches, fatigue and a dry cough
and promised to give daily updates and be 'totally
transparent' about the evolution of his illness.
French President Emmanuel Macron is seen on a screen wearing a face mask and giving the
thumbs up to the camera after he tested for Covid-19 on Thursday and is now self-isolating
'I am doing well,' the 42-year-old French leader said, speaking softly and dressed casually in a turtleneck top.
'Normally, there is no reason for it to evolve in a bad way.'
Macron said his infection 'shows that the virus really can touch everyone, because I am very protected and am very careful.'
'Despite everything I caught this virus — perhaps, doubtless, a moment of negligence, a moment
of bad luck, too,' he said.
In France, Macron's diagnosis brought criticism that he had set a bad example as the country sees a new uptick in cases and instances of the French president violating the virus-control guidelines were captured on camera in recent days.
The 42-year-old head of state urged his compatriots to stay safe in a self-shot
video on Friday and blamed his contraction of the Covid-19 virus on a combination of negligence and
bad luck
Macron usually wears a mask and adheres to social distancing rules,
and has insisted that his virus strategy is driven by science.
However, critics pointed out a number of slip-ups in his behavior over the past week, including a close-quarters handshake to an embrace with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio
Costa, 59, in Paris on Wednesday and repeated
big, group meals.
He shook hands and half-embraced the head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Angel Gurria,
70, at a meeting Monday.
Both were masked, but Macron's office acknowledged Friday the move was a 'mistake.'
A fellow European leader who spent time with Macron at an EU summit last week, Slovak Prime
Minister Igor Matovic, tested positive for the virus Friday.
Ten other leaders at the EU summit have since tested negative;
others either aren't getting tested or haven't released results.

He shook hands and half-embraced the head of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development,
Angel Gurria, 70, at a meeting Monday (pictured)
In his video message on Friday, the president suggested that his behavior had helped limit
the spread of the virus.
'Had I not respected the rules, the barrier measures, I would have caught
it much faster and, most of all, I would have transmitted it in the preceding
hours to many more people,' Macron said.
He urged people to 'hold firm' and look after each other during the festive season, warning: 'The virus is picking up, even stronger.'
Despite his diagnosis, Macron plans to continue running the
country, and went ahead with a planned speech by video conference on Thursday.
He said: 'I am working at a slightly slower pace because of the
virus, but I shall continue to focus on high-priority issues, such as our handling
of the epidemic, or, for example, the Brexit dossier.'
Macron joins Britain's PM Boris Johnson and US President Donald Trump in a growing
list of world leaders who have contracted Covid-19.
Last week, Macron spent two days in intense negotiations at the EU summit in Brussels with the leaders of the other 26 member countries.
PM Boris Johnson, who has been snubbed by Mr
Macron on face-to-face Brexit talks, tweeted: 'Sorry to
hear my friend @EmmanuelMacron has tested positive for coronavirus.
We are all wishing you a speedy recovery.'
Macron, 42, is staying at a residence called La Lanterne (pictured)
in Versailles and is suffering from fever, cough and fatigue, it
emerged today
Video excerpts released by the EU showed the leaders spread out in a circle in a huge meeting
room — Macron, and most of the other leaders, were not masked.
Macron also hosted or took part in multiple large-group meals in the days before testing positive Thursday, including with members of his centrist party and
rival politicians, while French people are currently advised to avoid gatherings larger
than six people.
His office has been contacting those present for the
meals, but told some people sitting far from the president that they were
not considered at risk.
Macron office isn't providing details of his treatment.
He is staying at the presidential residence of La Lanterne in the former royal
city of Versailles, tucked in a grove tightly guarded by police.
Macron's positive test comes as French health
authorities are again seeing a rise in infections and
are warning of more as French families prepare to get together for Christmas and New Year festivities.
France reported another 18,254 new infections Thursday and its death toll is just under 60,000.
France's Pasteur Institute released a study Friday suggesting
that meal times at home and in public are a major source of contamination.
Pasteur epidemiologist Arnaud Fontanet said on France-Inter radio
Friday that during the holidays, 'we can see each other,
simply not be too numerous, and at critical moments at meals, not too many
people at the same table.'
France recorded more than 17,000 new cases on Wednesday and another 18,254 on Thursday - sparking concern as people shop and travel more ahead of the Christmas holidays
France's virus death toll is just under 60,000. The virus has resurfaced in France
- as across the rest of Europe - and there are grave fears that deaths could spike in the
colder winter months
Macron took a test 'as soon as the first symptoms appeared' on Thursday morning and will self-isolate for seven days, in line with national
health authorities' recommendations, the presidency said.
The French health minister suggested that Macron might have been infected at the EU summit in Brussels last week,
but Macron had multiple meetings in Paris as well.
France had Europe's first virus case in January, but Macron's government
came under criticism for not having enough masks or tests
and not confining the population quickly enough.
A strict two-month lockdown brought infections down, and France sent children back to school and their parents back to work.
But infections surged again this autumn so he declared
a new, softer lockdown in October aimed at relieving pressure on hospitals.
The measures were relaxed slightly this week, though restaurants,
tourist sites, gyms and some other facilities remain closed.

Lana Del Rey had a tough time naming her favorite song from pal Taylor Swift's
new album The Tortured Poet's Department.
The Ultraviolence hitmaker, 38, was asked about
Swift's, 34, record during a red carpet interview, as she made her
return to the Met Gala in New York City, after a six-year hiatus.
When questioned if she had a 'favorite jam' from the album,
Lana took a moment to think before responding, 'It's the
one uhh, "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me,"' she replied, adding, 'Whatever that title was.'
The songbird — born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant — actually got
the title right, though she didn't seem to realize it.
While at the event she also posed with Swift's nemesis Kim Kardashian, 43 — who
sparked shock reactions with her thin waist — after Taylor made a pointed diss at the reality star on the album, reigniting their long-standing feud.

Lana branched out in a bizarre twiggy forest nymph dress and headpiece draped in a tulle veil at the event.
The singer left some heads scratching in the unconventional look, which consisted of a corseted custom beige gown designed
by Alexander McQueen's Seán McGirr.
The star took the 'Garden of Time' theme to heart,
with her gown featuring brown branches throughout.
She accessorized the outfit by holding a single red rose
in her hand. She also paired the look with chunky white clogs.
Lana — who recently teamed up with Kim for a Valentine's Day SKIMS
campaign — was joined by designer McGirr, who looked
dapper in an all-black look.
He matched Lana's rose with a dark rose-shaped brooch on his lapel.
Her unique headpiece forced Kim to duck out of
the way a few times as Lana stood next to her during another red carpet interview.
Meanwhile Kim - who is known for her curvaceous figure and bodacious behind
- showcased a wild body transformation in custom
Maison Margiela, sparking shock reactions with her thin waist.
Lana and Taylor have known each other for around 10 years.
They've previously collaborated on the song 'Snow on the
Beach' on Swift's Midnights album, which was released in 2022.

Meanwhile Taylor and Kim have been at odds for a long time.
On her latest album Swift took jabs at Kim with a song
titled Thank You Aimee — stylized as 'thanK you aIMee,' spelling out Kim in capital letters — which fans took to refer to Kardashian.
The ongoing feud between Taylor and Kim appears to trace back to the 2016
release of Kanye West's The Life Of Pablo.
In that album's song Famous, Kim's ex-husband raps: 'I feel like me
and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that b**** famous.'
The line, which alludes to when the 46-year-old rapper interrupted Taylor's win at the 2009 MTV
Video Music Awards, was supposedly passed on to the songstress
for approval, but she denies ever giving it the OK.
Taylor said she had been contacted about the song, but she was 'never
made aware of the actual lyric, "I made that b**** famous."'
In an effort to prove Kanye's version, Kim shared an edited clip from the studio of him calling up Taylor and seemingly getting her approval.
However, the clip shows him conveying the idea, more than the specific lyrics, and when the complete call later leaked it made it clear that the
use of 'b****,' which seemed to be a major issue for Taylor, was left out
completely.

The Costume Institute's spring exhibition falls on the
first Monday in May every year and is held at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This year the event is titled Sleeping Beauties:
Reawakening Fashion while the dress code is The Garden of
Time.
Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth are this year's co-chairs.
Also on the committee is Vogue's Anna Wintour.
'This year's co-chairs reflect a variety of
career achievements, and all have distinct style histories with
the Met Gala,' Vogue shared.
The showcase will feature approximately 250 items drawn from The Costume
Institute's permanent collection - with many of the pieces too fragile to ever be worn again.
The pieces will all be displayed using elements such as AI, GCI, and more while playing up themes of land,
sea, and sky.
'It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,'
said Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, of the upcoming exhibition.
The honorary chairs for the evening are Loewe creative director
Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

Welcome to Ice City: Russia plans to build frozen community 1,
000 miles from North Pole... as race for Arctic minerals heats up

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside
the Arctic Circle - in the Kremlin's latest move to
back its claim to vast oil and gas reserves under the polar ice cap.
Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear
cub cartoon hero, the initial 5,000 residents will live under a vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures sinking
below minus 30C in winter.
'This city will be of strategic importance as Russia's northern outpost,' said architect Valery Rzhevskiy who has
shown its modernistic designs to an approving Vladimir Putin.
Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago, some 1,000 miles from the North Pole
Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International Space
Station but in comparison is much larger - one mile long and 800 yards wide
Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards and secret service
officers, as well as scientists and explorers, as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral riches.
All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its own specially regulated temperate climate
- including many facilities to make inhabitants of other cities envious.
'We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with
attractions, an Aqua complex, hotels and a cathedral. Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones, a hospital, and sport facilities
are planned, too,' said Rzhevskiy.

Love in a cold climate: Ferocious, bloody battles and...

'We want people who will be living and working here not to
realise they are in some closed space with an aggressive Arctic
climate outside.'
The extraordinary venture - nicknamed 'wonder city'
- will be built at a cost of up to £4 billion on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago ,
some 1,000 miles from the North Pole, closer than any
other Russian city.
Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and even in summer
it barely climbs over freezing point.
Bleak: Strong winds make the area one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing
point
The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station,
but it is vast by comparison - just short of one mile long and
800 yards wide.
'So far it's the only project in the world with an artificial climate and integral life
support - just like on the space station. Not
only is it a new word in architecture, but
in human living too. We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.'

- Valery Rzhevskiy, architect
Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear power
station. Food wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish and poultry farms, greenhouses, a wheat processing factory and bakeries.
'There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city
will have two factories converting all kinds into ashes.'
It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which should pay the
costs of the development, it is claimed.
'This project is designed to work on any surface,
even on the Moon if needed,' said Rzhevskiy, one of Russia's top architects.
The ice city plans - currently with no fixed timetable for opening - comes as
all countries with territory touching Arctic waters are gearing up to make competing demands to the United Nations over underwater mineral exploitation rights.
Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer
Artur Chilingarov placed his country's flag in the Arctic seabed in 2007.
'We must prove the north pole is an extension of the Russian land
mass,' he said at the time.
A Canadian think tank this year even warned that 'an arms race maybe beginning', expressing concerns at the risk of conflict.
The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted their naval presence
in Arctic waters amid warnings of a Cold War that could
literally be cold - except perhaps at Umka.
